For purposes of broad comparison, bleaching practices may be categorized on the basis of their tendency
to generate organochlorine compounds. Though an oversimplification, it is convenient to progressively
categorize them as conventional, elemental chlorine free (ECF), enhanced ECF, and totally chlorine free
(TCF). Conventional bleaching is associated with the use of elemental chlorine, whereas enhanced ECF
precedes bleaching with extended cooking and/or oxygen delignification. Each has a different energy
profile that can be significantly influenced by site-specific conditions.
